The Opportunity

Reach Out and Read is hiring a Chief of Staff (CoS) to lead cross departmental initiatives and coordinate the work of the organization's senior leadership team. A primary focus of the CoS will be leadership of the diversity, equity and inclusion work aimed at growing the knowledge and competency of staff and advancing equitable and inclusive policies and practices across our network. Your lived and professional experience as a leader, project manager, and steward of change will be important to your success in this role.

Like many organizations, 2022 is an important year of change, learning and alignment at Reach Out and Read. We recently hired a new CEO and are working as a community to make the changes needed to best serve children and families across the country. It is a journey that requires the participation of all stakeholders. You will work closely with the CEO to enable these changes by incorporating learnings, promoting collaboration amongst leaders and ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion are ideals represented in all of our choices. You won't be alone in this work, these are changes owned by all leaders with your coordination and partnership in accountability.

Your passion for literacy and the creation of early readers will be key to your success in this role which reports to the CEO and serves as a member of the senior leadership team (SLT).

Key Responsibilities

Cross-Departmental / Organization-Wide Leadership

  • Introduce best practices and better ways of managing work and creating processes that will clarify where ROR stands on key projects/initiatives/org metrics.
  • Ensure that all members of the SLT are informed in a timely manner of all critical issues that require their attention and decision-making; ensure complete and accurate information, as well as a thorough analysis of options.
  • Proactively jump into the debate and share opinions, working collaboratively across the organization in the development of strategy, goals, and priorities; drive strategy implementation and clear barriers to action.
  • Assist in identifying and assessing progress to execute strategy and increase impact/service to the communities ROR serves.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate across functional teams; leverage strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges
  • Together with senior leaders, through project management and key initiative oversight, work to meet strategic goals with clear communication, elimination of silos, integrated workplans and implementation with coordinated accountabilities, objectives and associated budgets.

Organizational Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategy Development & Implementation

  • Continue to develop and drive towards clarity of ROR’s DEI strategy in connection with the organization’s next chapter strategy; helping to shepherd ROR on that journey and leading the implementation work associated.
  • Through this work, the impact of the CoS’ work will strengthen the organization’s DEI efforts across ROR’s footprint from the clinic level towards the national office.
  • Partner with ROR leaders to ensure that equity is interwoven throughout the organization’s policies and strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate equity training and professional development opportunities for ROR staff and leadership
  • Partner with HR (Positively Partners) to support managers to ensure the talent continuum (hiring, onboarding, and performance management system) promotes diversity, equity, and inclusiveness as well as identify, advocate for, and promote inclusive staff policies and practices.
  • Serve as a senior leader, inspiring and motivating others to engage fully and collaboratively in stewarding and executing the mission and vision of ROR.
  • Translate and communicate ROR’s DEI strategy for understanding by a variety of audiences internally and externally – translate and communicate strategy for understanding and action by internal organization at all levels.

  • Experience leading or managing diversity, equity, and inclusion work in non-profit, public health, education and/or health care setting
  • Senior leadership experience managing people, projects and/or initiatives in a multi-site organization or program
  • Community experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience partnering with a CEO and/or other senior leadership to advance organizational initiatives
  • Belief in the power of diversity and excitement for working in a diverse culture and on diverse teams
  • Experience in project management, taking ideas from conception to launch in fast moving work environments.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills/ emotional intelligence, with the ability to manage relationships with a diverse set of colleagues.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities, managing relationships and ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders/partners.
  • Strong analytical skills and use of data to drive decision-making and to build consensus/support
  • Strong written, communication, and organizational skills, including a track record of balancing and prioritizing multiple priorities simultaneously

Position Specifications

This is a full-time, exempt position. The Chief of Staff will be classified as a hybrid position, varying between work at a home-based office and ROR’s national center office in downtown Boston. Some travel may be required. Candidates outside of the Greater Boston area will be considered but preference is for someone who can travel regularly to be present at the national center office.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 and is commensurate with experience. ROR offers a robust benefits package including medical and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with match, paid vacation, professional development stipend, and more.
